Molecular Composition and Reaction Mechanism

Polyaspartic is formed through a chemical reaction between two primary components:

  • Isocyanate: Usually aliphatic isocyanates (e.g., HDI, IPDI), known for high reactivity and weather resistance.
  • Aspartic Ester: A specialized amine compound acting as a blocked amine chain extender, which delays the reaction rate, enhancing application controllability.

 

Example Reaction:

Isocyanate (R-NCO) reacts with Aspartic Ester (R'-NH₂) to form polyurea chains.

This reaction generates urea linkages, creating a highly cross-linked network structure.

 

Structural Characteristics

  • Main Chain Structure: Alternating residues of isocyanate and aspartic ester form a strong polyurea backbone.
